Mission Statement
Providing fundamental scientific research, knowledge transfer and education to the international railway community
The Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education brings together a multidisciplinary team from across the University to tackle fundamental railway engineering problems. The team actively engage with industry, other universities through Rail Research UK, and international partners. The centre also delivers the MSc postgraduate programme in Railway Systems Engineering and Integration.

Recent: The Journal of Rail and Rapid Transit 2008 Best Paper Award - highly commended a paper titled 'Decision support at the wheel-rail interface: the development of system functional requirements' authors V H Thanh, C Roberts, A M Tobias, J Williams, A Sterling and K Madelin.
Open Day: Thank you to those who attend our recent Railway Open Day on Thursday 30th April 2009. The event was well attended with in excess of 40 delegates representing a wide range of regional and national rail industry organisations. 21 organisations were represented at the event and included:
ARUP, Alstom, Atkins, Bombardier Transportation, DeltaRail, DfT, Heritage Railway Association, Mott MacDonald, Network Rail, ORR, Plasser UK, Rail Alliance, RSSB, Railway Strategies, TfL, Tube line, University of Greenwich, University of Birmingham
The proceedings of the day included presentations from:
The Director of the Centre, Prof. Chris Baker – An introduction to the work of BCRRE and its structures;
Associate Prof. Felix Scmid - MSc/CPD Provision.
Delegates were taken on laboratory tours where they had opportunities to see poster displays and research activity demonstrations.
Opportunities in the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education: There are two funded postgraduate research opportunities within the Materials and Metallurgy group:
